PROSPECTUS / PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Through SEW, sacred places in the world serve as catalysts for community expression in the three-dimensional worldwide web. Sacred sites include those created by culture and those created through natural process. Contributors to SEW consist of students and experts. The creation organism includes artists, art historians, archeologists, ecosystem scientists, anthropologists, native peoples, historians, storytellers, climatologists, wildlife biologists, site specialists, cultural analysts and new media creators. Together, we collaboratively seek, create and store information about the sacred earth site and then we translate the information into a three-dimensional interactive web environment. These environments span time and allow the simultaneous exploration of events throughout known history. Each sacred site becomes a component of the massive, traversable SEW. The SEW environments can be visited, contemplated, and experienced with an international audience. The visitor to the SEW site will appear as an avatar, a three-dimensional persona that is visible to other visitors.

SEW Coursework fulfills requirements in the Arts and Sciences as accredited undergraduate interdisciplinary coursework that includes focus areas in the fine arts, history, computer science, biology, ecology, geography, art history, anthropology and archeology. As a course, the SEW project can be taught to undergraduates who create the site with local high school students and area experts.
